Phoenix Learning the hard way
The Wilmot Phoenix came into the 2011 season as a team envisioning a Playoff berth and hopefully taking steps in the right direction. Both of these goals are still obtainable, yet it certainly doesn’t feel like it. The Phoenix lost its second game of the season Friday night, again in agonizing fashion, 52-0. Either the Phoenix are clearly inferior to the best teams in this league, or the team is simply learning the hardest way possible what it needs to do to be competitive.
The game started out poorly again, with the secondary of the Phoenix giving up yet another long pass touchdown early in the game. The Offense, clearly trying to feel its way into the game, couldn’t pick up a first down. A few plays later, the Cowboys held a 14-0 lead and the game was effectively over. The half ended with the Phoenix failing to get out of bounds to finish the half with some points, and the Cowboys led 32-0
The Second half was far better played by both sides, except for the offenses nasty habit of driving the field to simply leave the ball on the turf. No less than 4 Phoenix drives went for more than 50 yards only to end in tragedy. Fumbles, Interceptions and Referee misjudgment led to failed drives, and kept the Phoenix from at least making the score showable.
The Phoenix will now travel to Libertyville again next week to take on a Lynx team which embarrassed them a few weeks ago. The main question in this game is simply in the Phoenix have learned how to come out with some intensity, and if they have taken their lumps and come out better on the other end.
