Lesson Learned: Wilmot Succumbs to Pressure
The Wilmot Phoenix got a lesson in Championship caliber football Friday night, and they walk away a wiser team for it. Absolutely no breaks came this team’s way as the game’s first play resulted in a touchdown, and then an immediate interception turned into another score. Before 5 minutes of game time had elapsed, the Phoenix were down 14-0, and the game continued to get away from Wilmot.
It seemed that on every play, just one little breakdown lead to a ruined play. Against a team like the Lynx, that’s always the case. Holes were open, receivers were in the clear, yet a missed block, bad throw, or a runner’s slow progression to the hole was met with disaster. There is a theory in football called quicksand, where one play results in another, which results in another and the bad times just keep rolling…the first bad play came on the first defensive snap of the game, and it just never got better. For their credit, the Lynx continue to play football the right way, hard, fast and through the whistle.
The Phoenix move ahead knowing that they are a better team than what they showed on Friday; this by no means that the score should have been closer, or that a few breaks goes the other way and the game would have been more in debate. No, we were soundly beaten by a motivated unit, and there really isn’t much to say after that.
