2012 Phoenix News
Wilmot Phoenix Team Flyer Award Winners Feb 7th - The Phoenix fans and players have spoken, Nick Weiss and Andrew Menard will grace the team posters this year, an honor held by Kyle Ritter last season. Both Menard and Weiss, like Ritter before them, exemplify what it means to be a player for the Wilmot Phoenix organization, and we could not be happier with the choice to make them our delegates this season. Andrew Menard won the Phoenix Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2011, while Nick Weiss topped 1,000 yards in essentually 8 games last season. Congratulations to both.
First Three Polls of 2012 Announced Jan 15th - In what has amounted to almost a seven month off-season, the Phoenix hunkered down with some bi-weekly indoor practicing as well as some team insight on who has worked the hardest, given a chance with the team this year. The results, while interesting, were not suprising. James Jones engaged in abattle with mike Crews for who the team thought the most impressive 'rookie' has been on offense; after a few days of being even, Jones began to run away with the voting, and won by a 21% margin. On the Defensive side, it was not a contest. Troy Lessard enjoyed almost 2/3 of the overall vote, proving that the team is getting better, even while revamping. A third poll was conducted shortly after, asking what type of team people thought the Phoenix were going to be in 2012. As expected, 'balanced' won the day, however 'rushing' came in second by a 27% margin over 'passing', which is a very honst answer. Of course, the team would like to be as close to 50/50 as possible when moving the ball down the field, yet it has been noted that the new backfield is very promising. Thank you to all that participated.
The Phoenix faithful chose the Sabers: Dec 26 - In a poll taken over 10 days on the home page of the Phoenix's website, it was discussed who was the team's main rival moving forward. In the past, the Kenosha Sabers held a certain place in this team's heart, and apparently they still do, taking 53% of the total vote. The first members of the Phoenix organization came directly from the Sabers, it is no shock to see that even though most of them are now gone, the rival tag stayed the same. In second place came the Chicago Chaos, a team much like the Phoenix record wise. The Phoenix will play every team in their conference this season, giving the team a chance to knock heads with both teams in the race for postseason positioning.
The Phoenix Fall Back: Based upon the voting members of the GFL Proboards, last season's success will be measured heavily against the Phoenix's ability to play upper echelon football in 2012. Ranked #5 in the last Power Ranking poll (taken before the playoffs in August), the Phoenix slipped back to #6 in this poll despite leaguewide knowledge of the team's offseason free agent splurge. Overtaking the team at the moment is the South Milwaukee Rage, a more than worthy opponent the team will have a chance to face in the upcoming season. The other teams ranked ahead of the Phoenix right now are the Lake County Cowboys, Lake Shore Lynx, Chicago Chaos and the Kenosha Cougars.
Wilmot Phoenix Career Leaders: Dec 1st - The Wilmot Phoenix, now entering our third season, would like to take the time to congratulate the career leaders in Receptions (Kyle Ritter), Rushing Yards (Nick Weiss), Takeaways (Jeff Thorpe) and Tackles (Andrew Menard). With the 2012 season just around the corner, we will see if each of these individuals continues to hold their records, or if another player will surpass them.
Phoenix All-GFL Team Announced: Nov 22nd - The GFLmw.Proboards has released it's 2011 All-GFL team and six Phoenix players were on it. Running Back, Nick Weiss, who also took second place for Offensive Player of the Year, led the group which also features Wide Receiver Kyle Ritter, Fullback Fritz Dominik Go, Offensive Lineman Codee Sigler, Defensive Lineman TJ Dotson and Linebacker, Andrew Menard. The Wilmot Phoenix also featured the league's Coach of the Year, Adam Knoll. Ritter and Menard both won the Phoenix's Player of the Year awards, and Weiss broke the Phoenix's rushing record, and led the GFL, with over 1,000 yards rushed last season.
The Winter has arrived: Nov 8th - In a scant two weeks, the 2011 Winter will officially arrive and with such weather, it is time for the Phoenix to move inside. Over the next few months, the Phoenix will be holding indoor practices once or twice a month to continue getting the team ready for our 2012 pre-season. Of course, during this time we will continue to evaluate new talent, yet the team is already over 30 members; the Phoenix is aiming for a 35 man roster.
The Phoenix End the 6-man Season: Oct 29th - The Wilmot finished the 2011 6-Man developmental season with a 3-4-1 record using primarily new players and 2011 regular season backups. The season was, by all measures, a success. New Quarterback Mike Crews became more of a traditional signal caller as the season went on and new running back James Jones impressed a good deal of people. The Phoenix, since September, are working at least five new Wide outs, none of which have a clear advantage on anyone else at the moment. On Defense, new corner backs have fit in well but it has been Troy Lessard, a rookie Linebacker, that has impressed the most on that side of the ball.
The Phoenix Begin the Off-Season Sept 10th - The Wilmot Phoenix has opened up it's roster and is looking for new players as we head into the 6-man developmental league which will last a little over a month. As of now the Phoenix has had it's hands full with new recruits and we hope to sort through the pile as we get guys on the practice field and in some pads before the winter stops us all come the middle of February.
