The Phoenix found themselves on top of the score board after a hard fought, slightly rainy, and chilly game Friday night, 33-27. It was a fun and well fought game by both sides, good even clean game up to the final second.
The defense forced 5 turnovers and after a rough start buckled down as the game continued, much in normal Phoenix fashion. There were a lot of early missed tackles with the Sabers back attacking our rooks on the outside and sealing off Menard from the middle. A few adjustments and coaching went a long way to get back on track. We were soon swarming the ball and breaking through blocks, as always Menard was in almost every tackle and Peebles was in early season form from last year knocking heads around. A suprise came from a brand new rookie, Al Lundgren. Al was calling movements, making good jumps on plays and was in on almost every tackle regardless of where it was on the feild and almost came away with a pick. Gary, also a rookie, was here for his second week and had some good tackles on a big Sabers running back. Shane Willis and Nick Weiss both putting good pressure on the opposing QB led to some poor balls thrown and a few picks, all in all it was a good effort by all. Trion Brown also made an appearance and almost had a pick 6 in his first game back, it was good to see him back in form.
The offense ran relatively smooth all game, moving the ball well both in the air and on the ground. A few forced long balls led to two turnovers, 1 for each QB. Some missed reads and bad balls went out but they were few and far between as the airial attack was very effective, Schuk is getting better each game as he gets to know is receivers. Martinez pegged for 2 td's and Ritter for 1 through the air. Some work needs to be done making the right reads and not going for the big one as often, running what we are designed for a little bit more. On the other half of the offense, Nick Weiss, need I say more? That guy is a freight train, loves to just hit and hit and hit and hit and hit and...well yea you get it. Nick is a great power back, turned some big runs in, was a force on 2 pt conversions and short yardages. The 2 turnovers were nothing more than probably not the best idea, other than that the offense had no issue moving the ball and only came upon 1 4th down which was converted. Our new center also is doing a great job protecting and keeping his man off of runs and the QB, this is a great thing to see our offense have.
The rookies again played well like last week, Al being a great addition to that rookie roster. The vets showed up and did their thing as well, the leaders led and everyone listened on both ends of the ball and we won because of it. Looking forward to game 3 of the 6FL season.
