Observations from two feet away: As requested

October 23, 2010 at 10:38 PM EDT | No Comments (0 new)

I was asked to write more. About what...I cant decide. The purpose of this blog had many points to it; to give insight to the team, to give insight to our league and have other small little things such as info on our website, how our players are doing and so forth. To that extent, it's been a success, almost to the point where I update too little. Sometimes I write on here almost every day, othertimes, like now, it can go a week or more. To that end, I am a bit appologetic, yet during the fall, it's a bear working everything in on each other,

During the August-early November time-period, highschool football season really kicks my ass. I missed 3 of our four 6-man games, after spending an entire calendar year not missing a single team event. On top of that, school, and family life really make pounding out Phoenix material a chore sometimes. Yet I look around the rest of our league and realize that even in my down times, we are still far more 'current' than anyone else. At least once a week I go to every single GFL website and find that...indeed, none of them have been updated in weeks or months. And by updated I mean a single new thing...they are just left to rot.

I try in a number of ways to keep the website fresh at least in a few areas. The Home page has new photo Headlines, we do NFL picks every week, I try to keep updated on our fantasy league. I think one of our players is right, next year we are taking our band to ESPN. I dislike first years of everything...they never realize thier full potential, but we are getting there. I update particular pages almost once a week. The roster page where I keep track of attendance and new players coming and going. The player pages are a sore spot with me...I just dont have four or five hours to commit to them right now. I need to do a better job with Wilmot High school sports, agian, I do more than anyone else...but it's not up to snuff in my opinion.

The blog is another way to get new content, yet as I said before...some people check this thing daily, I dont keep up with it enough for that. See, I only like to talk when it's somethign major, something that needs to be said, or news that needs to be shared. There are tons of things I could write about, but they are small..and I hate to be tedious. I could write about our increased amount of new players, how the new board in functioning, fundraising ideas, tryout thoughts, additional 6-man thoughts sponsorship rants and money issues, but I dont. Reading that list, perhaps I should, it's seems interesting, so maybe I'll try a little more.

In either case, this is for you out there, who asked for a new blog tomorrow. I know for a fact that Wilmot HS will end in a few weeks...and then I willhave too much time on my hands, and I'll be the same overbearing guy people are used to. Just these three months of the year kick my butt...fortunately, by the time spring comes around they will be forgotten.

Observations from Two Feet Away - A Meeting Between the Similar [ edit | delete ]

By Adam Knoll | October 08, 2010 at 01:26 PM EDT | No Comments (0 new)

The entire 2010 season, I continued to look at a certain team in the other Conference. I continued to keep tabs of them, how thier season was going. I don’t know if they looked back at us, but it was interesting to note how the Desperados seemed to be just like us. It was almost uncanny. They lost all but one game (that they actually played), yet you cannot tell me they didn’t play hard, nor they didn’t gain respect as the season went on. What’s my proof?  With 3 weeks to go in the season, I actually picked them to take the 8th playoff seed. A 3 point loss to the Sabers killed that deal, yet they also were doomed by a four point loss to the Cowboys and a 5 point loss to the Cougars. This was not a team of embarrassment. No, this was a team just like us…one or two plays from crashing the party.

It took four wins to make the playoffs in the end. A win against a team here or there, maybe three wins would have done it, but no matter. The similarity between us and the Desperados was clear. They played 7 playoff teams, we played 8; their three closest losses were by a combined 12 points. Our three closest losses were by 13 points. We both finished with the same amount of played victories, 1. Yet no one could say either of our teams was an ‘easy’ game. We both finished our first season they was normal expansion teams do, with higher expectations and a solid core of players.

So, we meet tonight on the field as 6-man clubs. Is it the regular season? No. Yet, I cannot remember how many times I wished we had a chance to meet during this past season. Now we get to meet here. I expect to see a lot of the same things from both teams: hard play and respect. I don’t expect anything other than a close game, and maybe we can both use this as a springboard towards next season. And I hope we get to meet then as well.
